(Romain Gary, La vie devant soi.)

French Lessons #330

"Il passa le reste de son après-midi, parcourant le jardin zoologique d'un bout à l'autre, se mêlant aux peuples les plus petits qui habitaient les cages, se confondant avec les lézards, avec les souris, avec les coléoptères ou les pélicans." (Le Clézio)

French Lessons #329

"Un vrai nostalgique des boulevards je suis. Quand je pense que des tas de cons traînent leurs savates à Montparnasse sans connaître leur bonheur j'ai envie de leur tirer dessus." (Muriel Cerf)

Quotes 2017 #331

"Like a Buto dancer, he gets a hold of things before they even take shape in people's minds. He is everywhere at once. And at the same time, he is completely fragile, that is to say disarmed by intellectual adversity, by journalists." (Guattari on Coluche)

Quotes 2017 #330

"In comparison to ours, neolithic societies were certainly richer, being extraordinarily capable of perceiving elements of the cosmos and of poetry; the sketch marks of Lascaux, body painting, dance---all amazing." (Guattari)

Quotes 2017 #329

"Subjectivity needs movement, directional vectors, RITOURNELLES, rhythms and refrains that beat time to carry it along." (Guattari)

French Lessons #328

"J'ai plus de souvenirs que si j'avais mille ans." (Baudelaire)

Quotes 2017 #328

"The wanderings, the changes of occupation, the vicissitudes, the frustrations and humiliations, the cloud of unknowingness which surrounded them, all these factors common to both their lives, make them stand out like the ill-fated twins." (Henry Miller on Rimbaud and Van Gogh)

French Lessons #327

"Peu d'écrivains auront été aussi profondément séduits, captivés et, littéralement, inspirés par leur propre cadavre que Bataille." (Denis Hollier)

French Lessons #326

"C'est le roman qui, au contraire, est le dernier refuge du profane, l'une des dernières poches d'irréel épargnées par la laïcisation du sacré." (Denis Hollier)

Quotes 2017 #327

"The mind, no matter how antisocial it seems, attaches outrageous importance to things others consider unimportant or dull." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #326

"Whatever, by now I was old enough to know explanations are usually wrong. We never quite understand and we can't explain." (Richard Hugo)

French Lessons #325

"Chaque second qui passait avait plus de force que celles que j'avais vécues ailleurs, plus de durée." (Le Clézio)

Quotes 2017 #325

"The 1944 Italy I remembered brown and gray and lifeless. Every city, every small town reeked. No young men in the towns and no cattle in the fields. The war had taken the men and the Germans had taken the cattle. That was the Italy I expected to find when I came back. I hate to admit it, but that was the Italy I wanted to find. I fell in love with a sad land, and I wanted it sad one more time." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #324

"In poetry, the big things tend to take care of themselves." (Richard Hugo)

French Lessons #324

"Ainsi voguaient les Anciens, sous l'incertitude des cieux chargés d'étoiles, dans la confiance aveugle, et dans l'inquiétude de ne pas voir venir l'instant de leur propre mort." (Le Clézio)

French Lessons #323

"Espérer c'est presque vivre." (Gauguin)

Quotes 2017 #323

"She had Pagan eyes, full of nocturnal mysteries, and their light, as it came and went, and came again, was partially hampered by their oppressive lids and lashes; and of these the under lid was much fuller than it usually is with English women. This enabled her to indulge in reverie without seeming to do so: she might have been believed capable of sleeping without closing them up." (Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native)

(Barthes)

French Lessons #319

Quotes 2017 #322

"...what violence must be exerted on thought for us to become capable of thinking; what violence of an infinite movement that, at the same time, takes from us our power to say 'I'?" (D&G)

Quotes 2017 #321

"As Nietzsche succeeded in making us understand, thought is creation, not will to truth." (D&G)

Quotes 2017 #320

"In the end, does not every great philosopher lay out a new plane of immanence, introduce a new substance of being and draw up a new image of thought, so that there could not be two great philosophers on the same plane?" (D&G)

Quotes 2017 #319

"Spinoza is the vertigo of immanence from which so many philosophers try in vain to escape." (D&G)

French Lessons #318

"Le ravin, c'est une faille ouverte naturellement dans l'épaisseur de la falaise basaltique, un coup de sonde comme aucun homme n'aurait pu le donner. L'eau, ruisselant siècle après siècle, l'eau des ouragans et des tempêtes de mer, mais aussi l'eau impalpable de l'humidité quotidienne qui use et ronge goutte à goutte ---- l'eau de la vie a fait cela." (Le Clézio)

Quotes 2017 #318

"But there was money about, and there were local moguls---Henry Huntington, who ran streetcar lines; and Abbot Kinney, who made a fortune from his vast tobacco company---who decided they could manufacture a beach culture. So they concocted plans to develop separate and competing portions of the coastline, each tycoon vying for the leisured pursuits of the new leisured class." (Simon Winchester, Pacific.)

With Peter Cole at Infinity Books!

Quotes 2017 #317

"The words 'noonday hillside' suggest that the world does not have rigid topography but optional configurations. At 4 P.M. it might not be a hillside at all. We take our identities from our relationships, just as the earth takes its configurations from the time of day, the position of the source of light. This is a fluid world." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #316

"Think small. If you have a big mind, that will show itself. If you can't think small, try philosophy or social criticism." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #315

"Assuming you can write clear English sentences, give up all worry about communication. If you want to communicate, use the telephone." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #314

"Never worry about the reader, what the reader can understand. When you are writing, glance over your shoulder, and you'll find there is no reader. Just you and the page." (Richard Hugo)

French Lessons #317

"L'univers n'est ni en mouvement ni immobile, ni en progression ni en régression, Régéneration seulement." (Dogen, cité par Sollers)

French Lessons #316

"Tout l'accent est mis sur le GENJO, la 'réalisation comme présence.' Le juste moment, le moment favorable : de tous les côtés il n'est question que du Temps. Le Présent seul est réel, c'est un océan." (Sollers)

French Lessons #315

"J'ai envie de m'amuser, mon corps me freine. Je veux écrire, il veut sortir." (Sollers)

French Lessons #314

(Jean Giono)

Quotes 2017 #313

"The imagination is a cynic. By that I mean that it can accommodate the most disparate elements with no regard for relative values. And it does this by assuming all things have equal value, which is a way of saying nothing has any value, which is cynicism." (Richard Hugo)

Quotes 2017 #312

"Words love the ridiculous areas of our minds." (Richard Hugo)

French Lessons #311

"La philosophie est une réflexion pour qui toute matière étrangère est bonne, et nous dirions volontiers pour qui toute bonne matière doit être étrangère." (Georges Canguilhem cité par Mauro Carbone)

Quotes 2017 #311

"It was a beautiful day. How 'bout some coffee? Don't mind if I do. Take a little ride on my donkey. I love that donkey. Hell, I love everybody." (James Tate)

French Lessons #310

"Le vent, la pluie, le soleil brûlant. L'île est semblable à un radeau perdu au milieu de l'océan, balayée par les intempéries, incendiée, lavée. L'érosion extrême de la mer a modelé ces roches jaillies des profondeurs, les a usées, polies, vieillies, et pourtant reste sur chacune d'elles la marque du feu qui les a créées." (Le Clézio)

Quotes 2017 #310

Lights Out
(Hugo Williams)

We're allowed to talk for ten minutes
about what has happened during the day,
then we have to go to sleep.
It doesn't matter what we dream about.

Between a few, and me --
With them would Harbor be --

(Emily Dickinson)

French Lessons #307

Quotes 2017 #307

I have been treading on leaves all day until I am autumn-tired. (Robert Frost)

French Lessons #306

"Mais c'est ici, à l'Anse aux Anglais, que tout est devenu évident. C'est l'appel d'un autre monde, d'un monde vide d'homme, où règnent les rochers, le ciel et la mer." (Le Clézio)

Quotes 2017 #306

I don't feel this will change.
I don't want any thing
or person, familiar or strange.

This is the Hour of Lead --
Remembered, if outlived,
As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow --
First -- Chill -- then Stupor -- then the letting go --
